What is a standard drink?

In the US a standard drink contains 14 g (0.6 fl oz) of pure alcohol – about 12 fl oz of 5% beer, 5 fl oz of 12% wine or 1.5 fl oz of 40% spirits. A UK unit is 10 mL (8 g) of alcohol and an Australian standard drink is 10 g.

The formula

Pure alcohol (g) = volume (mL) × ABV ÷ 100 × 0.789, the density of ethanol. Divide by 14 for US standard drinks. UK units = volume (mL) × ABV ÷ 1,000.
