Detailed guide to Resistance

Electrical resistance describes how strongly a material or component opposes current flow. It is a core quantity in circuit analysis.

The ohm is the SI derived unit of resistance, while kiloohm and megaohm are widely used to express practical component values more clearly.

What is electrical resistance?

Resistance measures how much a component limits the movement of electric charge. Higher resistance means less current for the same applied voltage.

Resistors, sensors, heating elements and many semiconductor circuits depend on resistance values for proper operation.

Ohms, kiloohms and megaohms

One kiloohm equals 1000 ohms, and one megaohm equals 1,000,000 ohms. These decimal prefixes make resistor and insulation values easier to read.

Small signal circuits often use kiloohms, while leakage paths and insulation measurements may be discussed in megaohms.

Resistance in circuit work

Resistance appears directly in Ohm's law, which links voltage, current and resistance in a simple linear circuit model.

Converting resistance units helps when comparing component labels, reading schematics and checking whether a circuit is in a practical operating range.
