The mulch formula
Cubic yards = square feet × depth (in) ÷ 324. One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch, 162 sq ft at 2 inches or 108 sq ft at 3 inches. For bags, divide the cubic feet by the bag size: a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 50 cu ft, or 25 bags of 2 cu ft.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches is right for most flower beds. Thinner layers do not stop weeds well, and more than 4 inches can keep roots too wet. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
Bulk or bags?
Bags are convenient for small beds. Above about 2–3 cubic yards bulk delivery is usually cheaper, even with a delivery fee. Prices vary a lot by region and material, so enter your local price to compare.
